Pre AND Post 1900 Comparative Essay In this essay, I have chosen to compare and contrast the following two poems Even Tho by Grace Nichols and To his Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell. These two poems were roughly written three centuries apart, and so the social factors and religious beliefs as well as other things were different. Therefore different ideas would be portrayed in the poems.In the 17th century when To his Cot Mistress was written, women were not known for writing poems about love let alone sex, as womens opinions werent respected. If a woman was sent a poem like the one that Andrew Marvell wrote, then she would probably go weak at the knees and do whatever was asked of her. However, in the late 20th century, when Even Tho was written, womens opinions and rights were respected in society and more and more female poets emerged with some ideas that were once thought unacceptable for women.One other main factor that affected the ideas portrayed in these poems is partly to do with religion and partly to do with what used to be thought of as socially acceptable and what is thought as socially acceptable now. At the time To his Coy Mistress was written, women were expected to keep their virginity until they were married. This is why the poem is set out as an argument, trying to persuade his lover to have sex with him. This is different to the time when Even Tho was written because women were not expected to stay a virgin.I will now discuss the similarities and differences between the content of the first poem, To his Coy Mistress and the second poem Even Tho. The first poem To his Coy Mistress is unusual for the time as it has an untraditional structure. It has no verses but it has three sections each with a different number of lines. The fact that it has no verses suggests that the subject of the poem never really changes, only the perspective of the poet. This is so, that the poet can present an effective argument. In the poem, some of the sentences carry on to the next line this is to in crease the pace and build up a good argument. Another reason for why it is unusual for its time is because of the purpose. At the time that the poem was written, women were expected to keep their virginity until they were married, but the poet is asking his lover to lose her virginity, although they arent married.The three different sections separate the different parts of the argument that he is putting across. In the first section, we see the poet describing what he would do if he could spend eternity with his lover, A hundred years should go to praise thine eyes, and on thy forehead gaze. In the second section, he is saying that although it would be nice to do the things which he said in paragraph one, he cant because he wont live forever and she will eventually die with her quaint honour. A quote to show this would be, Nor, in thy marble vault, shall sound my echoing song: then worms shall try that long preserved virginity. The final section concludes the argument by saying what they should do in order that his mistress does not die having never expressed her love towards her lover.I think, that from the perspective of the poets mistress, the poem is quite successful. This is because the poet uses some very effective methods to persuade his lover. In the first section, he sweet-talks his lover before scaring her into bed with thoughts of death in the second section. This is why the structure is very good as in my opinion, it allows the poet to separate the poem into three separate parts, creating an effective argument.The second poem, Even Tho by Grace Nichols is in many ways very different. Her ideas would have been seen as very controversial if they were expressed at the same time as To his Coy Mistress was written. We can see this from the purpose of the poem, the intention being to inform her lover that she wants sex without the commitment. This is unlike the woman in To his Coty Mistress as she has to be heavily persuaded to do such a thing. At the ti me Even Tho was written, women were far more in control of their own lives and didnt succumb to obsequiousness as easily.A way that these two poems are similar is that they both have an untraditional structure. Even Tho, is very much a free verse poem, in that it doesnt have a set number of lines per verse or a set number of words per line. It also has very little punctuation. This enables it to highlight the untraditional ideas it contains. This is similar to the reasoning behind an unconventional structure in To his Coy Mistress. Both of these poems are written in the first person, this means that both of the poets can reinforce their emotions by making the poem more personal. Again, Even Tho and To his Coy Mistress are partly similar in purpose; they both express emotion and give the poets view on their relationship.The manner in which the poets express their emotions are quite different. In Even Tho, the poet uses a positive and light-hearted tone to put across her feelings, whe reas in To his Coy Mistress, Grace Nichols uses more traditional ideas of love as well as his unorthodox views on his relationship with his lover.In my opinion, both poems may well be seen as relatively offensive because they are very biased as they only take into account their own opinions. What about the other person in the relationship? They may desire something different! To his Coy Mistress is especially offensive because the poets requirements are just sexual pleasure.As is to be expected, the language of these two poems is very different in many ways. The vocabulary in To his Coy Mistress is very dated as the poem was written in the mid 17th century. Unfamiliar words like thou and thine are used, which could be difficult to comprehend for the majority of people in this day and age.There is a lot of imagery used in this poem to create a picture in our minds of the poets lover and the relationship that they share. The poet uses metaphors such as Times winged chariot and Iron ga tes of life. He also uses similes, for example, the youthful hue, sits on thy skin like morning dew. In addition to this simile, this sentence shows us another technique, which is called personification. All of these techniques, plus some very elaborate descriptions build up some very apparent images.The poem rhymes all the way through in couplets and this is one of the only regularities in this poem. This means that when you read the poem, as well as picking up the untraditional ideas, you also sense the regularity, which makes the poem easier to identify with. It also has the same alliteration in it, for example: long love and love at lower rate. These are both to be found in the first section, along with some assonance that gives similar sounds, for example: shouldst rubies find. These are all soft, sumptuous and loving sounds which comply with the messages in the first section. As you would think, the second section contains more hard sounds, for example: turn to dust and the th ird section contains dramatic and indicative ideas and so uses sounds to back these up, for example: instant fires and rough strife.The poem appeals to a couple of the senses, mainly sight because of all the imagery used and sound because of the descriptions used associated to sound. The beat of the poem is also regular, as it has approximately 8 10 syllables per line; this suggests that it flows when read.The vocabulary of Even Tho is very different to that of To his Coy Mistress, mainly because it was written much later, round about the 1970s or 1980s. This meant that the language was much more up to date. The time that it was written also means that it was possible for the poem to be written with a Caribbean dialect. An example of this is, Keep to de motion, and leh we go.It was very unusual to see a poem written in a Caribbean dialect from the period in which To his Coy Mistress was composed, so this highlights a difference between the two poems. The dialect allows the poet to bring in some of her ethnicity and culture to her work.A connection between the two poems is that they both use ample amounts of imagery. In Even Tho metaphors are used, for example: Im all watermelon and star apple and plum when you touch me. This metaphor shows us what the poet is feeling. Grace Nichols uses juicy, soft fruits to describe it because thats how she feels. The poem is very short, and due to this, we dont find any similes or personification, but the poem does have some very interesting descriptions to create images, such as, you be banana, I be avocado, which describes the male and female sex organs the banana symbolizes the penis as it is very hard and long, whereas the avocado denotes a vagina as it is very warm, soft and in particularly red! This type of imagery is somewhat different to that used in To his Coy Mistress as it is more intimate, light-hearted and humorous, unlike the romantic and sometimes frightening imagery of To his Coy Mistress. The sounds to the poem are one of the keys to its success. Assonance such as watermelon, strar apple and plum gives juicy and sumptuous sounds that appeal very much to the readers sense of taste and touch. The imagery used when talking about the male and female sex organs, banana and avocado is quite amusing, and so appeals to the readers sense of sight.Besides the poem being outwardly funny, it has a relatively fundamental underlying message about the poets relationship, which is shown in the poets choice of repetition. The reiteration of Even Tho and leh we break free, is what tells the poets lover exactly what she wants from their relationship. She wants to be an individual even tho she enjoys having fun and spending time with her lover.In my opinion, the poem is similar to To his Coy Mistress when it comes to pace and rhythm as they are both irregular and so stressing their equally unorthodox messages.In conclusion, I would say that these poems arent completely unrelated, and the main thing that influences their differences is the time in which they were written. They both have similar purposes, only the perspective changes. It is largely male in To his Coy Mistress, but incredibly female in Even Tho. Another way that time has made the poems more different is the way that they are presented. To his Coy Mistress is presented as an argument that is trying to persuade the poets lover to give in to her passion for the poet and lose her virginity.However, Even Tho is more of a story than an argument. This is because she doesnt feel that she needs to persuade men to do what she wants them to do, only tell them how she feels. Andrew Marvell felt that he needed to persuade his lover, as simply making a suggestion would not be enough. These are just a few examples of the ways that they are different, and of course, there are many more, but we must remember the simple similarities. Both poems are about sexual relationships, they are both written in the first person and to conclude, they both express emotions!My particular favourite out of the two poems has to be Even Tho. The reason being, it is so simple, but yet has so many layers of meaning and tone. It is also comical as the imagery is fairly explicit as it talks about bananas and avocados representing the sexual organs on a humans body. The poem Even Tho also has a far more informal style of writing than To his Coy Mistress and communicates to more than just the poets lover. All of this is why Even Tho is my favourite poem out of the two.

I think the main reason that marijuana is not legal is because there has been so much effort in the war against marijuana that they will never legalize it. Another reason they wont legalize it is because marijuana is considered a gate-way drug, which will only lead to more serious drugs. So in the end, the government seems to be right on top of keeping us healthy and smart about drugs. Naturalism in The Grapes of Wrath In John Steinbeck's novel The Grapes of Wrath, the Joad family and the changing world in which they live is portrayed from a naturalistic point of view. Steinbeck characterizes the Joads and their fellow migrants as simple, instinct-bound creatures who are on an endless search for paradise (Owens 129). The migrants and the powers which force them to make their journey--nature and society--are frequently represented by animals. The Joads, when they initially leave home, are a group of simplistic, animal-like people who barely understand or even realize their plight, but as the story progresses, they begin to grow and adapt to their new circumstances. They evolve from a small, insignificant group of creatures with no societal consciousness into a single member of a much larger family--society. Steinbeck strongly portrays the Joads and other displaced "Okies" as being animalistic. They often talk about their predicament in simplistic terms that suggest that they are initially not conscious of the circumstances that force them to leave Oklahoma. Muley Graves, for instance, tells Tom Joad and Jim Casy that the rest of the Joads, whose house has been destroyed by a tractor, are "piled in John's house like gophers in a winter burrow (Steinbeck 47)." This presents the image of a family of animals that have clustered together, hoping to fend off a predator with their greater numbers. They see the societal problems around them in terms of a predator as well; on one occasion, Casy asks a man at a service station, "You ever seen one a them Gila monsters take hold, mister? (Chop him in two) an' his head hangs on. An' while he's layin' there, poison is drippin' into the hole he's made (Steinbeck 132)." This refers to the devastating, unbreakable grip of the socioeconomic forces a t work above them (Lisca 96). A particularly important element that represents the migrants on a naturalistic level is the turtle (Lisca 97). Introduced in the first interchapter, the turtle trudges along wearily but steadily on a relentless search for a better place to life. In a similar way, the Joads are constantly on the move. They do not really comprehend why they have to travel, yet they accept it (Owens 131), and are determined to reach the promising paradise of California. Neither the turtle nor its human counterparts will be stopped by any obstacle.

The strength that this topic has been holding and the endless number of debates held over it has attracted me to express my opinion on it too. Undoubtedly, western culture and Indian culture are poles apart. There is a significant difference between the two in all aspect. Amongst all others the most noticeable difference between the two is that India has been a family oriented society, whereas America has been an individual oriented society. Openness and self dependency are a few words that define western culture, but Indian culture is the complete opposite of this. Globalisation and mass media has laid the basis of the merger of western culture with Indian culture and this collision can better be termed as westernisation. The damage that Indian culture has experienced can be broken down into three parts which are, pursuit of wealth, complex of the west and the most essential of all the power of western media. Cinema is the most powerful media, hence it is not only an entertainment industry, but is also seen as a role model. According to me, majority of the western ideas such as cohabitation, etc, have travelled through this medium. In other words, Hollywood has definitely influenced Bollywood and is responsible to a large extent for this clashing of culture. Respect for human rights, democracy, free speech and women’s rights are concepts which have had a wide ranging influence on Bangladesh. Even if they  have not as yet completely permeated to the level of the masses. The media is an effective way of influencing people. But unfortunately, in Bangladesh, always the negative side of all good things seems to influence people the most Bangladesh Television, which actually aired really good US TV serials, the Bangladeshi people soon began to become addicted to the Indian culture. They ate, drank, walked, talked, shopped, and slept like Indian people. They still do. As days passed, the number of Indian channels began to increase. Now there are more channels than there were channels on a TV set back in the 90s. The strongest influence of this culture is on children and women. There was a time when teenage boys never watched a single Hindi movie. Nowadays, from child to men all watch Hindi programmes including movies.This success is not for the Bangladeshi culture, but for Indian culture. Indian culture is eating up the creativity and productivity of many talented Bangladeshi individuals.

It would be wise to obtain a degree, such as a masters in business or a CIM (Chartered Institute of Marketing) certification. It would also be good to have â€Å"extensive experience in other marketing positions,† as well as having been a product manager.IT literacy is also a must. Although these can help one obtain the job, one does not have to have a certain amount of years or experience to become a product manager. The hours are varied and one must have a lot of commitment to do this job well. One must be willing to let go of certain activities. The pay, however, is very good. Creative writing is anything where the purpose is to express thoughts, feelings and emotions rather than to simply convey information. I’ll be focusing on creative fiction in this post (mainly short stories and novels), but poetry, (auto)biography and creative non-fiction are all other forms of creative writing. Here’s a couple of definitions: Creative writing is writing that expresses the writers thoughts and feelings in an imaginative, often unique, and poetic way. (Sil.org What is Creative Writing?) Writing is a form of personal freedom. It frees us from the mass identity we see all around us. In the end, writers will write not to be outlaw heroes of some underculture but mainly to save themselves, to survive as individuals. (Don DeLillo) Writing of any sort is hard, but rewarding work – you’ll gain a huge amount of satisfaction from a finished piece. Being creative can also be difficult and challenging at times, but immensely fun. How to get started Many people think that just because they’ve read a lot of stories (or even if they haven’t!) they should be able to write one. But as Nigel Watts writes: There is a common belief that because most of us are literate and fluent, there is no need to serve an apprenticeship if we want to become a successful wordsmith. †¦ That’s what I thought until I tried to write my first novel. I soon learnt that a novel, like a piece of furniture, has its own set of requirements, laws of construction that have to be learnt. Just because I had read plenty of novels didn’t mean I could write one, any more than I could make a chair because I had sat on enough of them. (Nigel Watts, Teach Yourself Writing a Novel) By all means, if you’re keen, jump straight in and have a go: but don’t be too disappointed if your first efforts aren’t as good as you’d hoped. To extend Watts’ metaphor, you may find that these early attempts have wonky legs and an unsteady seat. There are lots of great books aimed at new fiction writers, and I’d strongly recommend buying or borrowing one of these: Wannabe a Writer? (Jane Wenham-Jones) Teach Yourself †¦ Writing a Novel (Nigel Watts) How to Write Fiction (and Think About It) (Robert Graham) On Writing (Stephen King) I’d also recommend starting small. Rather than beginning with an epic fantasy trilogy, a family saga spanning five generations, or an entire adventure series †¦ have a go at a short story or a poem. And if you end up chewing your pen and staring at a sheet of paper, or gazing at a blank screen for hours, try kickstarting your writing with a short exercise. Don’t stop to think too much about it †¦ just get going, without worrying about the quality of the work you produce. Tips and tricks for beginners Do some short exercises to stretch your writing muscles – if you’re short of ideas, read the Daily Writing Tips article on â€Å"Writing Bursts†. Many new creative writers find that doing the washing up or weeding the garden suddenly looks appealing, compared to the effort of sitting down and putting words onto the page. Force yourself to get through these early doubts, and it really will get easier. Try to get into the habit of writing every day, even if it’s just for ten minutes. If you’re stuck for ideas, carry a notebook everywhere and write down your observations. You’ll get some great lines of dialogue by keeping your ears open on the bus or in cafes, and an unusual phrase may be prompted by something you see or smell. Work out the time of day when you’re at your most creative. For many writers, this is first thing in the morning – before all the demands of the day jostle for attention. Others write well late at night, after the rest of the family have gone to bed. Don’t be afraid to experiment! Don’t agonize over getting it right. All writers have to revise and edit their work – it’s rare that a story, scene or even a sentence comes out perfectly the first time. Once you’ve completed the initial draft, leave the piece for a few days – then come back to it fresh, with a red pen in hand. If you know there are problems with your story but can’t pinpoint them, ask a fellow writer to read through it and give feedback. HAVE FUN! Sometimes, we writers can end up feeling that our writing is a chore, something that â€Å"must† be done, or something to procrastinate over for as long as possible. If your plot seems wildly far-fetched, your characters bore you to tears and you’re convinced that a five-year old with a crayon could write better prose †¦ take a break. Start a completely new project, something which is purely for fun. Write a poem or a 60-word â€Å"mini saga†. Just completing a small finished piece can help if you’re bogged down in a longer story. Online resources NaNoWriMo Every November, hundreds of thousands of people just like you do something extraordinary: they write a novel in just thirty days. The â€Å"rules† state that you can’t start writing Chapter 1 until 00.01am on November 1st but you can spend as long as you like before that planning†¦ Authors’ websites and blogs I read lots of websites and blogs written by authors and these give real (sometimes harsh) insights into what it’s like to write professionally. One which has been a strong favourite of mine for many years is Holly Lisle’s. Check out her advice for writers and her weblog. She also has an excellent newsletter which I subscribe to, and some very thorough and helpful e-books on various aspects of writing available for purchase. Competitions listings Having a theme and a deadline can make a startling difference to a writer’s motivation! If you’re in the UK, Sally Quilford’s competition listings are a comprehensive and regularly-updated list. I Should Be Writing podcast This is a practical and inspiring podcast: I Should Be Writing by Mur Lafferty. She describes the podcast as â€Å"For wanna-be fiction writers, by a wanna-be fiction writer† (though since starting it several years ago, she’s had considerable success selling her short stories) and focuses on science fiction and fantasy. How to Say Good Morning in French Correctly SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Who hasn’t dreamed of having breakfast in an adorable French cafe, dipping a croissant into a delicious coffee, and chatting with a new friend over pastries? Only- quelle horreur!- when you go to greet your friend, you suddenly can’t remember how to say â€Å"good morning† in French. In this article, we’ll cover not only how to say â€Å"good morning† in French, but how to address the greeting to different people, and even how to say goodbye. It's that easy! How Do You Say Good Morning in French? If you know anything in French or you’ve ever watched Beauty and the Beast, you probably know how to say hello: â€Å"Bonjour!† Well, good news- †Bonjour† is also the standard French way to say â€Å"good morning† In French, bonjour is pronounced bon-zhoor. The French ‘j’ sound, as it’s heard in bonjour, is a bit like sh in English crossed with the dg sound in â€Å"judge.† It’s not the expected â€Å"j† sound we have in English, so be sure you really listen to how it’s said before you accidentally greet somebody by saying, â€Å"Bone Jurr.† Literally translated, â€Å"bonjour† means â€Å"good day.† â€Å"Bon† is the French word for â€Å"good,† and â€Å"jour† is the French word for day. Generally, French people use bonjour as a greeting up until about six PM, at which point they switch to another greeting, covered below. However, though we might say â€Å"good day† to greet or say goodbye to people, it’s purely a greeting in French. We’ll cover the goodbye version below! There is another method of saying good morning in french: â€Å"bon matin,† pronounced bon mah-teen. However, though this is a literal translation of â€Å"good morning,† it is not typically used in France. It’s an Anglicization, or Anglicisme, that works as a literal translation but that isn’t commonly heard. However, bon matin may be heard more frequently in Quà ©bà ©cois French, the variety of French spoken in Canada. Generally speaking, bonjour is the standard method of saying â€Å"good morning.† But depending on where in the world you are, you may also be able to say bon matin! Interestingly, you generally want to say bonjour to someone once per day. The next time you see them, you should use a more informal greeting! Ahh, bonjour, mon ami. Personalizing â€Å"Bonjour† But maybe you have a specific person you want to say â€Å"good morning† to, or you want to get a little fancier. Bonjour is a simple greeting that can be adapted to a lot of different situations! If you want to be polite and you’re speaking to someone whose name you don’t know, you can greet them with â€Å"bonjour† and a title. French is a language with gendered nouns, so there are different forms of address for people depending on their gender: Madame is used to refer to married women, just as â€Å"Mrs.† would be used in English. It’s pronounced mah-dahm. Mademoiselle is used to refer to unmarried women, just like â€Å"Ms.† in English. It’s pronounced mah-dehm-wah-zell. Monsieur is used for men, just like â€Å"Mr.† in English, and is pronounced something like meuh-syeuh, with both syllables rhyming with â€Å"the.† These vowel sounds can be quite tricky for non-native French speakers to master, so spend some time listening to native French speakers saying it and imitate them. All of those words can be added to the word bonjour for a proper â€Å"good morning† greeting in French- †Bonjour Madame/Mademoiselle/Monsieur.† If you’re greeting a small group of people, you can greet them all by name: â€Å"Bonjour Isabelle! Bonjour Delphine! Bonjour Étienne!† But if you want to greet an audience, you probably can’t greet them all by name. In that case, you’d add the phrase tous to bonjour, changing it from an individual â€Å"hello† to â€Å"hello everyone!† Literally translated, tous means â€Å"to all.† It’s pronounced ah toos. But you can get even fancier, if you so desire. Because bonjour is such a flexible greeting, you can add all kinds of additions to it to make it more specific, such as: Phrase Meaning Pronunciation Mon amour My love Mohn ah-moor Ma chà ©rie My sweetheart/darling (to a woman) Mah shey-ree Mon chà ©r My sweetheart/darling (to a man) Mohn sher Ma belle My beautiful (to a woman) Mah bell Mon beau My handsome (to a man) Mohn boh Bonsoir, Paris How to Say Goodbye and Good Night in French Parting is such sweet sorrow- in French, you need a goodbye to match. â€Å"Au revoir,† pronounced oh rev-wahr, is the typical French goodbye. Literally translated, it means something close to, â€Å"Until I see you again.† You can say this any time of day in any kind of situation, formal or informal. Saying goodbye in the evening gets a little trickier. The literal French version of good evening, â€Å"bonsoir† is used as a greeting after about six PM. You don’t generally use bonsoir as somebody is leaving unless the situation is formal- instead, you’re more likely to say â€Å"bonne soirà ©e,† bohn swah-ray, which is the same phrase with feminine endings, when you’re wishing somebody a good evening as they or you are leaving. You also wouldn’t say â€Å"bonne nuit,† literally translating as â€Å"good night† and pronounced bohn nweet, unless the person is literally going to bed. In general, â€Å"au revoir† is a good all-purpose goodbye unless you’re looking for something more specific. In that case, one of these other goodbyes may suffice- just be certain you match the correct one to the situation, especially because regional differences may make one or the other more acceptable. Therefore, undoubtedly, it can be concluded that Dr. Williams committed a violation of the HIPAA. Here, there was no showing that he requested for permission from his patient to allow him to disclose the PHI. Instead, he used the information as a defense to a potential suit for medical malpractice. By giving out the information to the medical insurance carrier to, he can save himself from help him from any criminal liability for the error committed against patient for the mistake he committed. Since the doctor has identifiable health information, he may face a â€Å"criminal penalty of up to $50,000 and up to one-year imprisonment.   The criminal penalties increase to $100,000 and up to five years imprisonment if the wrongful conduct involves false pretenses, and to $250,000 and up to 10 years imprisonment if the
